The Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria is one of three regional sites of the Library of the Health Sciences (LHS) headquartered in Chicago. In addition to providing a range of services and resources for its primary clientele and neighboring communities, the Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria participates in the activities of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region.

The Regional Head Librarian is responsible for all aspects of the management of a user-centered academic health sciences library, with emphasis on information and instructional services, information resources access, user support, collection development, and outreach. This position will lead an innovative team in integrating technology, online and curriculum-based instruction, and evidence-based practice into liaison and outreach programs. The Head has an active leadership role in UIC programs on the Peoria campus and serves on administrative and curriculum committees. As a member of the LHS leadership team, the LHS-Peoria Regional Head contributes to planning and strategic direction for the four sites of the Library of the Health Sciences. LHS department heads play a vital role in the leadership and governance of the UIC University Library. This is a tenure-system appointment with research and publication expectations.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading the development of information and outreach services that support the learning, teaching, patient care, and research activities of the primary clientele of the University of Illinois at Chicago health sciences programs at Peoria
  • Establishing and maintaining liaison with faculty, academic chairs, program coordinators, and affiliated teaching hospitals
  • Coordinating access to information resources in multiple formats with the health sciences bibliographer and facilitating access to information resources held elsewhere

Responsibilities:

  • Articulates a vision for the development of collections and collection services in relation to the mission and strategic goals of the university and the strategic plans of the library. Of particular importance is the need to integrate distinctive collections into undergraduate teaching and learning.
  • Plans, manages, and leads the library's collection development program in support of the University's strategic academic goals. Identifies new areas and models for growth and investment, or reduction and disinvestment, in response to changes in university curricula and research programs. Accountable for the allocation and use of multiple collections funds.
  • Identifies and helps deliver new means to apply and integrate information researches in research.
  • Proposes methods for improving collection processing and management services; identifies legacy services and operations to reduce or curtail.
  • Provides strategic support on issues relating to acquisitions, cataloging, preservation, serials control, electronic resource management, collection analysis and collection space allocation. Monitors and guides the selection and collection management work of a network of subject specialists and disciplinary group coordinators.
  • Participates in collaborative initiatives within the library and the university, and in broader professional and scholarly contexts. Represents University Library in forums at the consortial, regional, national, and international level—especially those that focus on initiatives, projects, policies, and standards related to collections, collection support services, and archives.
  • Helps implement a new organizational structure that features 16 working groups organized into three service councils. The AULCS also will be a key participant in a new senior management group – the planning council -- comprising one representative from each of the service councils, the other AULs, the director of human resources and organizational development, and the dean. As a member of the planning council, the AULCS will actively participate in and lead a wide range of planning and decision-making activities.
  • Assists the dean in managing and administering all aspects of the library's mission. Along with four other AULs, the AULCS will also directly advise, support, and represent the dean and will carry out specific administrative and management assignments as assigned or necessary.

Qualifications, Required:

  • ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience required. Additional advance degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience leading operations or projects in an academic library or library services organization; experience at an executive level helpful.
  • Knowledge and understanding of materials selection, acquisition and licensing, processing, discovery, access, and automation issues for general, special, distinctive, and archival collections. Significant direct work and management experience in one or more of these specializations desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in supervising, developing, and coaching professional, paraprofessional, and technical staff.
  • Record of success creating and promoting a clear vision, selling ideas, and following through on decisions in formal and informal leadership situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring innovative and complex projects to completion, especially for projects requiring collaboration across library departments, and academic and administrative divisions across the university.

The Oregon State University Libraries provides collections and services that support and enhance the University's instructional, research and public services programs. As a member of the Resource Acquisitions & Sharing (RAS) Department within the Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries, this position is responsible for the supervision and effective operation of the Acquisitions & Collections Maintenance Unit. This is a key management position at OSU Libraries in an innovative and team oriented environment. The unit manager uses his/her knowledge of current and emerging trends to oversee the evaluation, management, and promotion of a wide range of electronic and physical resources. In close collaboration with personnel from other appropriate library units, the incumbent coordinates support for the acquisition, processing, and maintenance of physical and electronic resources. The incumbent is responsible for the daily operations related to licensing, negotiation, and tracking the acquisition process for electronic resources. The person in this position facilitates communication and coordinates activities with other library units; acts as liaison with other libraries, consortial groups, vendors, and patrons.

Responsibilities:

60% Administrative

  • Directs the daily operation of the Acquisitions and Collection Maintenance Unit including all aspects related to physical and electronic resources acquisitions and maintenance.
  • Negotiates and manages licenses, including expiration and renewal. Coordinates with OSU Procurement and Contract Services to maintain compliance with state and university guidelines.
  • Makes vendor recommendations, monitors vendor performance and coordinates ordering, receiving, and payment authorization.
  • Coordinates the OSU Libraries & Press Gift funds and gifts in kind process.
  • Coordinates routine collection management activities and special projects.
  • Establishes, documents, and maintains policies and procedures.
  • Determines training needs and recommends training programs.
  • Coordinates workflow activities to provide timely access to physical and electronic resources for the OSU community including oversight of the E-resources life cycle.
  • Monitors emerging trends specific to licensing, acquisitions, and collection maintenance including the application of evolving technologies and opportunities to initiate/implement best practices, services and systems.
  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes data and statistics, prepares departmental and other reports.
  • Is a standing member of the Collection Coordination Council.

  • Supervises 7.75 classified staff.

About the Library Department: The Library at Harbor College enjoys a new home in the new 30,000 square-foot Library & Learning Resource Center, providing an atmosphere of reflection, collaborative study, and inquiry. The Library instruction program comprises course-specific workshops, in which over 2,100 students participated in 2014, and two ongoing 1-unit library science courses. The Library Division currently consists of two full-time faculty members.

Salary and Benefits: The selected candidate will be rated into the salary schedule after hiring based upon experience and professional preparation. First year probationary faculty members are rated into a salary range of $51,020 to $79,440 for the 10-month academic year. The doctoral differential is $3,210 per month. The Head of Planning and Assessment works closely with the dean and senior management to design, manage, and coordinate a participatory, biennial strategic planning process that is user-centered, outcomes based, and includes articulation of assessments. The plan provides a blueprint of strategic directions and resource allocation for the Libraries. This position provides ongoing consultation throughout the organization for data collection methods relevant to the strategic planning assessment process, collaborating to produce internal and external reports about the outcomes, accomplishments and impacts of the University Libraries.

The Head supervises a data analyst who collects institutional data and ensures timely reporting to outside agencies such as ACRL, IPEDS, accreditation processes and for other purposes. The Head of Planning and Assessment leads the design and implementation of national and local user surveys, focus groups and other methodologies to collect input from stakeholders. The Head also consults and collaborates on research studies initiated by the Libraries, or by individual library faculty who seek to gather evidence of impact. The Head serves as the Libraries representative on various campus groups related to assessment, as well as working within the national assessment community to represent UNLV interests (e.g., Project Information Literacy and Ithaka S&R)

Additional responsibilities of the position include project management; acquisition of complex formats and electronic resources; managing and negotiating electronic resource license agreements; supplying work lead direction to SJSU staff; and developing and providing training. The incumbent in this position works collaboratively with the Head of Collection Development and the University Library Accounting Office to monitor allocations and expenditures for Library acquisitions and serves as primary contact and negotiator with Library materials vendors.
