What's the Buzz? Cannabis Law Tell Me What's a Happenin'

Spending on the legal cannabis market is forecasted to hit $57 billion by 2027. Approximately two-thirds of this market will be in legal recreational use and the other third will be medical. Law firms are increasingly starting Cannabis practices to weed through regulatory, compliance, intellectual property, contract, and litigation issues ethically and competently. This session will address cannabis horticulture, cannabis as a business and medical use of cannabis from the founder of the Cleveland School of Cannabis. Additionally we will review the history of marijuana laws in California especially regarding dispensaries. Finally, we will discuss best practices for keeping up new laws and regulations particularly in local jurisdictions.

Good, Bad, & Ugly Germs: Perspectives on the Centennial Remembrance of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

For the centennial commemoration of the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918, medical libraries are working with museums to remember the loss of more than 50 million lives worldwide. How are librarians helping curators create both interesting and informative exhibits that reach general and specialized patrons? What research is currently underway at medical libraries on the influenza virus, and how does the Spanish Flu affect current research? This panel explores the link between librarians, researchers, and curators when current research and commemorative remembrance intertwine.

The Brave New World of Gene Drives (Medical Section Program)

A major National Academy Press report released in June 2016, "Gene Drives on the Horizon: Advancing Science, Navigating Uncertainty, and Aligning Research with Public Values," highlights the promises and perils of the newest gene drive technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9. Speakers at this conference session will discuss the basic science and technology of gene drives, the governance issues for such technologies where they may be applied, and the ethics of these brave new innovations.

Genetic Mutations: How Do They Arise and What Do They Do? Interdisciplinary Perspectives

This panel discussion will feature scientists from different disciplines presenting the subject of genetic mutations from the viewpoint of their work. An evolutionary biologist will introduce the topic and discuss generally how natural selection works and the time scales involved. Next a scientist working on genetic changes in organisms will discuss how these changes take place and how they are regulated. Finally a representative from the medical community will address specifically how diseases evolve and change, and what the implications are for human health in particular. Each will give a 20 minute presentation then the floor will open for questions and discussion.
